When Should Your Baby First See a Pediatric Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and most dental professionals recommend scheduling a baby’s first dental appointment within six months of the first tooth erupting and no later than the first birthday. If your child is past the first birthday and hasn’t been seen by a dentist, it’s never too late to start. At Sunny Side of the Street Pediatric Dentistry, we welcome kids of all ages and look forward to laying the groundwork for lifelong oral health.

What to Expect at Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Dr. Tyffani and her team at Sunny Side of the Street Pediatric Dentistry are pros at putting kids of all ages at ease, and we’ll make sure every visit is quick and positive for you and your little one. We do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, so we’ll let your child set the pace. In general, the following is what you can expect during your baby’s first dental visit.

A Warm Welcome

A baby’s first dental visit, or any child’s visit, always starts with a warm welcome from our kid-friendly team. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to help you and your child feel comfortable and at ease.

Our Reception Area

Magical is how our young patients and their parents describe our kid-centered waiting area. Your little one will have plenty to do and explore during your brief wait.

The Treatment Area

We will usher you into one of our comfy, colorful treatment rooms. During a first dental appointment, you’ll typically hold your baby in your lap. We rarely take dental x-rays during a first baby visit unless we believe they are essential.

The First Exam

Dr. Tyffani will introduce herself and make sure you and your little one are comfortable. Next, she will perform a quick but thorough exam, including an assessment of the teeth, gums, and jaws and an evaluation of your baby’s oral growth and development.

Dental Cleaning

Most babies will not require professional dental cleaning. However, if your child’s first visit is at age 2 or 3, we may gently clean those pearly whites to lower the risk of tooth decay and cavities. Our hygienists are great at explaining our procedures and tools using kid-friendly language to take the fear out of the visit.

Next Steps

Once the exam and cleaning are completed, Dr. Tyffani will answer your questions, address any concerns, and talk to you about what you can expect as the rest of your child’s teeth erupt. She will also discuss pacifier use, thumb-sucking, nutrition, oral hygiene care at home, needed preventive treatments, and so much more.
