Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Sedation dentistry under the care of a qualified and experienced dental provider has been shown to be a safe way to provide children with their needed dental care. We constantly monitor a child's vital signs, including the heart rate, oxygen level, and blood pressure. We go above and beyond recommended safety protocols to ensure every child in our care is safe during treatment.

What Are the Different Pediatric Sedation Options?

At Sunny Side of the Street Pediatric Dentistry, we are pleased to offer a range of sedation dentistry options, from mild sedatives to moderate sedation and general anesthesia. The type of sedation right for your child will depend on individual needs, the extent of dental treatments required, and parental preference.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, this mild form of sedation involves breathing a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask. Your child will feel calm, relaxed, euphoric, and maybe even a little giggly in just a few short minutes. Your little one will remain awake and responsive, and once the treatment concludes, the nitrous oxide effects will wear off immediately.

Oral Conscious Sedation

The level of sedation can be mild or moderate, depending on the type of medication and its dosage. Your little one may drift off into a light sleep but will remain conscious and responsive. Many of our young patients don't remember much of their treatment. Oral sedatives take a few hours to wear off, so your child will need to rest for the remainder of the day.

IV Sedation

We offer IV sedation at our office under the care of a highly experienced, board-certified anesthesiologist. This form of sedation is easy to adjust to your child's needs and comfort level. Your little one will feel drowsy and may fall asleep but will remain conscious and responsive to directions. Most children have no recollection of their dental appointment. IV sedation takes time to wear off, so your child will need rest and monitoring for the rest of the day.
