Crowns are hollow, tooth-shaped prostheses designed to cover a damaged, decayed, or infected tooth. They mimic the natural shape, size, and appearance of a real tooth.
Because crowns cover up the entire damaged tooth all the way down to the gums, they provide excellent protection. With a crown, your child will be able to smile proudly, chew without pain, and keep their teeth healthy for years to come.
At Sunny Side of the Street Pediatric Dentistry, we offer both stainless steel crowns and tooth-colored zirconia white crowns. Not sure what’s right for your child? Learn more about each one below.
Stainless Steel Crowns
Stainless steel crowns are the best way to repair and restore baby (primary) teeth. They come in a variety of pre-fitted sizes and can be placed directly onto a baby tooth with minimal preparation. This makes the process simpler and faster, which is especially great for very young children.
Another benefit of stainless-steel crowns is that they're very strong but are still much cheaper than zirconia crowns. This makes them ideal for baby teeth, which will eventually fall out of your child’s mouth as they grow up. Steel crowns provide excellent protection for damaged baby teeth until they're replaced by healthy, natural adult teeth.
NuSmile Zirconia White Crowns
If your child has a damaged or severely decayed baby tooth, a white crown may be a better option. Also called “tooth-colored” crowns, these are made out of zirconia that’s matched to your child’s tooth color.
Unlike stainless steel crowns, white crowns must be custom-built to fit into your child’s mouth. This means they look very natural and provide excellent protection, but are a more complex and expensive procedure. For this reason, we usually only recommend tooth-colored crowns for permanent adult teeth and refer this procedure out to ensure you receive the best solution for your child’s needs.
